About Course
Globalization has increased interactions among people from diverse cultural backgrounds in academic institutions, workplaces, communities, and digital environments. Although cultural diversity creates opportunities for collaboration, knowledge exchange, and innovation, differences in values, beliefs, communication styles, and social expectations can also lead to misunderstandings and interpersonal conflicts. Effective intercultural communication therefore requires more than simply recognizing cultural differences; it involves understanding cultural contexts, adapting communication approaches, demonstrating empathy, and responding appropriately to different situations. Developing intercultural competence is essential for building respectful relationships, fostering collaboration, and maintaining harmonious interactions in an increasingly multicultural world.
This course provides participants with conceptual knowledge and practical skills in intercultural communication to support effective, empathetic, and ethical interactions in multicultural environments. Participants will explore the concept of culture, the causes and stages of culture shock, and key theories and frameworks for understanding intercultural communication and cultural differences. The course also examines the challenges of intercultural communication in academic and workplace settings, including classroom participation, academic integrity, teamwork, leadership, and conflict management. Furthermore, participants will develop intercultural competence through an understanding of cultural awareness, communication strategies, and the ability to adapt their behavior in different cultural contexts. Through real-life case studies, practical applications, and reflective activities, participants will learn to navigate cultural differences, prevent misunderstandings, and manage potential conflicts in everyday interactions across social, community, academic, professional, and digital environments.
